Sue

This weekend we were in Chicago and I took a trip to The Field Museum and took a bunch of photos of Sue. Here’s what it looks like in Photosynth.

Judgment of Tears

A few years ago I noticed several copies of Anno Dracula at Half-Price Books. Based on the blurb on the back I picked it up and really enjoyed it. A fun Victorian pastiche combine Dracula, a historical England, and Victorian literature. I’ve been looking for the next two books ever since. I quickly found “Judgment of Tears” but could not lay my hands on The Bloody Red Baron. I got tired of waiting so I jumped into Tears hoping it wouldn’t ruin Baron for me.

I wasn’t disappointed, while not as good as Anno Dracula, it was almost there. Now if I can just find more Kim Newman books. They’re frustratingly hard to find.

The Eyre Affair

A friend of my wife recommended this book to her last year and it’s been sitting on her shelf ever since waiting to be read. I read the back and it sounded interesting so I jumped in and had trouble stopping once I started. This is one of the rare cases where I was overjoyed to find a new writer that struck a chord with me and I can’t wait to get the rest of the books in the series.

Just a ton of fun.

Captain Alatriste

I’ve been a big fan of Arturo Perez-Reverte since Club Dumas was published in English, however in the past few years I haven’t kept up with his new novels. I finally picked up the first book in his Captain Alatriste series and blew through it in two nights. I would have done it in one but I’m getting old and need my sleep.

It’s not a long or deep novel, but it’s a a fun adventure story set in a historical context I’m not overly familiar with which made it more interesting. I’ve already picked up the next two books in the series and hope to get to them soon.
