Halting State

I’ve been working my way through Charlie Stross’ stuff for a while, while some of his stuff I would qualify as merely good, others are can’t-put-the-book-down-great. This is one of the latter.

Set ten years in the future, portable computing is ubiquitous and real-time overlays are common. The book starts off with a bank heist in MMORPG and then takes a turn off to left field.

The book was that much better because I had been planning on waiting for the paperback, but I was able to buy a copy with a coupon for my Sony Reader. However, it’s a keeper and I’ll probably want a hard copy someday.

First Batch of Mead

First Batch

Finally, after years of talking about it but never doing it, I’ve started my first batch of mead. I originally was going to go for a simple semi-sweet mead to start with, but after reading the gotmead forums I decided to go with Joe’s Ancient Orange, a supposedly fool-proof recipe.

We’ll find out in two months.

Homicide

My lovely wife gave me this for Christmas, it was one of the few from my Amazon wishlist she could actually find at Barnes and Noble. I haven’t been reading as much as normal the past few weeks because of other time commitments and burnout, but this one I couldn’t stop once I started. The basis for the NBC show, which I’ve never seen, it reads like a real life version of a Law & Order episode, which I guess it is. Sorta.

New Bookshelves

Back to work today after two weeks off. I didn’t get all of the projects I had planned done, but I did get the new bookshelves in.

New Bookshelves

Six shelves, each six feet long and a tad under twelve inches wide. This should hold me for a while.
