From the train
Cool – typing on my Treo board the train from Penn Station to Princeton. Just saw Avenue Q – great show.

Oooh, Bodies in the Solar System Larger than 200 Miles in Diameter.
What’s amazing is that when I was kid pouring over astronomy books we didn’t have photos of most of these objects let alone ones of this detail.
And along with the new Bujold book came a new Joe Lansdale book. This one is a standalone, not part of his great Hap and Leonard series.
Harry Wilkes gains the ability to see visions of past traumatic events trigged by sounds after a childhood ear infection. Together, they fight crime. Or something like that.
While not a bad book this was far from the best I’ve read by Lansdale. It was bit too short and everything came together a little too neatly. Another hundred pages to flesh out the characters wouldn’t have hurt. Still, it was a good read.
I bought it read on the plane on my next trip, but jumped the gun a bit.
New Bujold! Ah, part one of two, boo. Another fantasy but this some not in the world of The Curse of Chalion. An eighteen year old girl on the run, a heroic Lakewalker, and boojums, or boggles or malices whatever you call them today.
It was a good read, but not quite as good as her previous fantasy novels. However, this is the first half of the story so I may feel differently by the end. And a good Bujold book is better than most any other sci-fi/fantasy out there today.
I do wonder, this is at least her second book with an old man getting involved with a much younger woman, I’m not sure if she targeting her audience of if something else is going on.
I’ve migrated my site over to a new server. It may take a few dates for the DNS changes to propagate throughout the world so if you send me email and I don’t reply, it may be stuck in the ether.
I had heard good things about Firefly when it first aired, but was too busy at the time to watch it and then it was canceled after only a few episodes. What a great show, possibly could have been one of the top five sci-fi shows of all time had it been given a chance. Smart, sexy and funny as hell.
Serenity was the followup movie directed by Josh Whedon for Universal, not Fox which screwed up the Firefly release. A good sci-fi flick, probably more enjoyable if you’ve watched the show, which may explain it’s mediocre box office results. Which is too bad, while it’s merely good if you haven’t seen the series, it’s great if you had. Whedon did a good job of typing up a good number (but not all) of the loose ends from the show.
A fascinating book that I’ve been meaning to read for sometime. I was lucky enough to stumble across a copy at Half-Price Books while looking for a Thyroid book for my wife.
I never quite realized how wide-spread this pandemic was, or how oppressive the government was during the first world war. The brief history of modern medicine and how the disease spread was compelling. My only complaint is that it seemed to drag a bit towards the end.
A strong dark ale from the Wychwood Brewery in England. I enjoyed it, but the flavor was missing something particularily on the backend. It may be a side-effect from the bottling process and shipping, but if felt like there was a blank spot in the flavor as I drank it.
Luckily this time the person has insurance and the car isn’t totaled. So far I’m not experiencing any pain so I should be spared another summer of physical therapy.
A hastily recorded slip-jig to test out the new audio plugin.

I wasn’t intending to buy this, I wanted the new Tolkien book but Border’s didn’t show it was published yet and I happend to find this in paperback. Another good read, but not as apocalyptic as his previous novels. Butcher is really building a large set of side-stories, I hope he’s able to keep writing and eventually resolve them.
He has a new book out, however given that I generally read them in one night, it’s probably not worth hardback prices.
