Glasshouse

Glasshouse

Another post-singularity novel from Charlie Stross. At first it didn’t grab me but as it progresses I enjoyed it more and more. It wasn’t as humorous as his previous novels, but I liked the back story of Censorship Wars and computer viruses that edit a person memories.

I enjoyed it all the more because I paid $4 for it at the Houston Library Book sale.

Will in the World

I was looking forward to this book given the lack of decent biographies of Shakespeare, however at first I was a little dissapointed.  The large number of “One could suppose that…” or “If this happened…” demonstrated the lack of knowledge of of Shakespeare’s early life.

However, as the book progressed I enjoyed it more and more although I don’t know if I buy all of the comparisons of Shakespeare’s life to his plays.

Mid-Missouri Mandolins

M-3 Mandolin

Damn, I was sorry to hear that Mid-Missouri Mandolins had closed due to an electrical fire and a set of insurance company lawyers. I really like my model M-3.

Apparently they’re reforming as Big Muddy Mandolin, hopefully they’ll be able to keep making great instruments.

Once…

James Herbert writes good page turners and that what this amounted to. Talented young woodworker returns to his country home after a stroke and discovers faeries and an evil witch. And gets laid.

’twas decent enough but would have been better it it was a bit more epic.

Dead Beat

Family secrets, blackmail, and necromancy, not a good day for Harry Dresden. With the last two Dresden books I was up way too late on a work night to finish them. I wouldn’t put them in the classic category, but they’re damn good reads.

Sadly there’s only one more out in paperback and I haven’t found it yet, looks like it’s time for an Amazon order.

Blood Rites

Vampires, family, porn stars and an errant puppy. Not a good start for Harry Dresden. I was a tad bit late to work today because I was up until 1:30am finishing this book, and I didn’t start it until 6pm. This on was as good if not better than his last, I’ll be annoyed when I catch up with his publishing schedule.
